The 4th August is National Friendship Day, a day to celebrate the importance of loving, platonic relationships. This blog, written by MQ ambassador Amazin LeThi, details how pet ownership, in particular dogs, can profoundly impact our lives.

National Friendship Day highlights the immense value of relationships in our lives. While we celebrate human friends, we must also recognize the profound impact of our four-legged companions on our well-being. As an MQ Mental Health Research ambassador and lifelong dog owner, I can confidently say that a dog’s companionship is an unmatched source of joy and well-being.

Dogs have an extraordinary ability to lift our spirits and provide unwavering loyalty. The bond between a person and their dog transcends companionship; it significantly enhances mental health. Research shows that interacting with dogs reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. The simple act of petting a dog releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” fostering a sense of calm and happiness.

For many, including myself, a dog is more than just a pet; they are a best friend and an invaluable part of the family. They greet us with wagging tails and boundless enthusiasm, reminding us that we are loved and valued unconditionally. This unique form of friendship can be especially comforting during challenging times, offering a sense of purpose and routine. Taking a dog for a walk encourages physical activity and fresh air, both essential for mental health.

Moreover, dogs can be a bridge to social connections. Walking a dog in the park often leads to friendly conversations with fellow dog owners, creating opportunities to build new friendships. This social interaction can alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, further enhancing mental well-being. I always joke that my social calendar revolves around my dog; I’ve built lasting friendships just by having a dog, attending daily dog groups, and meeting fellow dog owners in the park.

On this National Friendship Day, let’s celebrate not only our human friends but also the incredible dogs that enrich our lives. They teach us about loyalty, unconditional love, and the joy of living in the moment. Whether you have a dog or are considering adopting one, remember that these loyal companions offer immense mental health benefits and enduring friendships that last a lifetime.
